NBC Latino Congratulates: Paloma Sanchez

Paloma Sanchez is a curious 10th grader at Casco Bay High School in Portland, Maine who loves math and fashion. With a 3.4 GPA, Paloma is an honor roll student who has achieved honors for both academic achievement and her extraordinary work habits.

“Paloma is a terrific role model and brings a huge, vibrant energy in the any classroom she’s a part of,” says her school principal, Derek Pierce. “She’s a very curious and promising scholar who is comprehensively strong in all subjects. Not many kids like art and math, but she has a tremendous passion and energy that shines.”

Paloma is a budding designer whose latest creation will be part of a school fashion show where she will be the only underclassman featured. She also loves helping others and is passionate about community service and education. Earlier this year, Paloma created a project where she proposed empowering women in Malawi through education, an interest her principal says, is a strong influence on her fellow students.

“She’s just a very special student whom we really appreciate as one of our own,” says Pierce. “I know she’ll very far in fashion and whatever she chooses to do.”

Name: Paloma Chantel Sanchez

Grade: 10th

School, Hometown: Casco Bay High School in Portland, Maine

Favorite subject: I like art and I like math. Art is like just my thing, I’ve always been creative, if I write a picture, I’ll make you a masterpiece. And with math, there’s only one right answer – once you figure out how to do it, it’s easy.

Favorite book: “Angry Conversations with God” is one of my favorite books. It was a book about lady who went through hard time in her life and went from being  a Christian to doing bad things. It was funny and interesting to see how people perceive Christians.

Favorite activities: I like trying to create new things with old clothes, hang out with my family and draw.

I’m passionate about: I love clothes and fashion. I was seven years old when I saw my baby sitter using a sewing machine and thought it was the coolest thing ever. My latest creation is my white dress.

My inspiration is: Coco Chanel. Her style and line is so classy and I love how she was so glamorous.

In college: I want to study business, so I can have my own fashion store one day.

In 10 years I see myself: I see myself married with kids and beginning my perfect, successful business. I also see myself traveling and in Africa doing mission work.
