Nominees announced for the 2012 NCLR Alma Awards, Eva Longoria will host

It’s the biggest Latino award show of the year, the Alma Awards by The National Council of la Raza.  Today, we found out who might be accepting awards on September 21, 2012.

Mexican heartthrob Diego Boneta was nominated for Favorite Movie Actor  for his rocking debut performance in the movie “Rock of Ages.”

“It’s been an amazing transition from doing TV in Mexico to doing Hollywood movies,” Boneta told NBCLatino. “This has always been a dream of mine, ever since I was a kid watching movies.”

Also nominated is Academy Award winner Andy Garcia for his stellar performance as General Enrique Gorostieta in “For Greater Glory,”  a movie that captures the story of the Cristero War in Mexico.

“The fact that we’re telling a story about this time period is important,” said Garcia in an interview with NBCLatino.  “It represents our culture and its artists well,” added Garcia.

Rodrigo Santoro is also nominated for making audiences laugh as Holly’s (played by Jennifer Lopez) hubby in “What to Expect When You’re Expecting”.

“I got the script; I read it, but I actually didn’t know what character they were thinking for me,” said Rodrigo Santoro about his role in the movie.

Martin Sheen is being nominated for his role in the film “The Way” which was produced by his son Emilio Estevez. Sheen and Estevez wrote a memoir, about their father- son relationship, titled “Along the Way”. The book was supposed to be originally a companion to the movie but turned into a memoir about lessons in love and forgiveness between father and son.

For the Favorite Movie Actress category it is no surprise that many Latina icons were included. Eva Longoria (“For Greater Glory”), Penelope Cruz (“To Rome with Love”), Eva Mendez (“Girl in Progress”), Salma Hayek (“Savages”), Roselyn Sanchez (“Act of Valor“), Cameron Diaz (“What to Expect When Expecting“),  and Zoe Saldana (“Colombiana”) are amongst the talented Latinas nominated for this category.

Zoe Saldana was voted “Best Latino Actor” at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards in early June and NBCLatino chatted with Zoe on what she really thinks about being Latina.

It looks like two actresses in particular are getting a lot of love. Jennifer Lopez was nominated for three categories: Favorite Movie Actress, Favorite TV Reality, Variety or Comedy Personality Act, and Favorite Female Music Artist.

The Colombian bombshell Sofia Vergara is also feeling the love. She was nominated for Favorite Movie Actress- Supporting Role in “The Three Stooges” and Favorite TV Actress for her role as Gloria in ABC’s comedy series “Modern Family”.

But it looks like the real competition will be in the music category. Dominican and Puerto Rican bachatero Romeo Santos and Cuban hottie Pitbull will be among the nominees battling it out for the Favorite Male Music Artist award. Which Caribbean bachelor do you think will win?

Others in this category are “Livin’ La Vida Loca” singer Ricky Martin, Puerto-Rican and Filipino cutie Bruno Mars, and famous guitarist Carlos Santana.

One person that did not get any love this year was Selena Gomez but, BFF Demi Lovato was chosen for the Favorite Female Music Artist award. I hope there are no hard feelings there.

Lovato will have to compete against famous Grammy Award winner Gloria Estefan, J. Lo, Esperanza Spalding and Glee star Naya Rivera.

Eva Longoria will be returning as host this year, the award show will air on Friday, September 21 at 8:00 EDT on NBC and online voting launches at AlmaAwards.com
