Jennifer Lopez threatens to sue tabloids over Casper Smart gay rumors

Jennifer Lopez may have won America over with her sweet smile, but her latest move reveals a glimpse at the no-nonsense attitude that may have helped launch her to the top of the 2012 Forbes Celebrity 100 List.

The triple-threat entertainer is reportedly furious over tabloid reports that boyfriend Casper Smart recently visited a “gay sex club” and is threatening to sue Star Magazine and In Touch Weekly on the basis of publishing the harmful rumors, TMZ reports.

Both publications have attacked the May-December couple in recent issues, reporting that Smart “betrayed” Lopez by getting “caught” in a “gay sex club,” even adding that the 25-year-old back up dancer and choreographer has been “blinded by love for a younger man.”

So what exactly started the swirl of ugly rumors? Just one day before the ex-“American Idol” judge celebrated her 43rd birthday on July 23, Smart was photographed entering a staircase adjacent to a New York City sex toy shop.  He left the establishment – marked by a neon-lit “Peep Show Open 24 Hours” sign – empty-handed.

Even without a naughty trinket for J.Lo in tow, the trip ignited gossip that quickly went viral regarding Smart’s sexual orientation, citing the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood establishment as a spot popular among gay men “cruising” for casual hookups.

Although J.Lo is no stranger to catty tabloid reports, the rumors seem to have gone too far too quickly for her liking. Proving that for the pop diva, “Love Don’t Cost A Thing,” Lopez had her attorneys Shawn Holley and Howard Weitzman, team up to squash the speculation. According to TMZ, the high-powered duo sent letters to the two publications threatening legal retaliation on the basis that their “reports” are “false, malicious and defamatory” and can potentially cause “immense damage” to the pair’s reputations and career prospects.  The letters demand that the gab rags print a full retraction.

Should the magazines fail to do so, reports TMZ, Lopez and Smart will “immediately file a lawsuit” against the publications’ editors.
