Sofia Vergara’s marriage proposal in Mexico documented in home video

Sofia Vergara’s 20-year-old son Manolo Gonzalez is a budding filmmaker and he put his skills to use as he filmed some of the memorable moments that occurred during his mother’s 40th birthday celebration for his popular YouTube series.

The latest episode of “Mi Vida Con Toty” (“Toty” is his affectionate nickname for Vergara) captures the escapades of the “Modern Family” star during the trip to Mexico, which included a marriage proposal and a jail scare.

The seven-minute video begins with Gonzalez filming Vergara, boyfriend Nick Loeb and 107 family and friends as they explored the ancient Mayan Ruins in Chichen Itza.

“As a little girl, she always wanted to go to the top of the pyramids. Unfortunately, people are not allowed to do that anymore. But since it was her birthday, her team worked for months on end to get her special permission to go up!,” Gonzalez explains of the birthday excursion.

As Vergara and Loeb are seen climbing the pyramids, Gonzalez describes a very special moment.

“Once they were to the top of the pyramid, my mother’s longtime boyfriend, Nick, proposed to her,” Gonzalez says.

But the moment was nearly overshadowed by a Mexican official who approached Vergara, with the accusation that the group didn’t have permission to climb the ruins.

“We have evidence you went up, just surrender yourself voluntarily!,” official is heard saying in the video. “We have proof!”

Taking  jokes about jail time for illegal trespassing in stride, Vergara is seen later in the video dancing on stage at a fun-filled Mexican fiesta, sipping cocktails and flaunting her sparkly birthday gift.

It was all part of a birthday celebration that Gonzalez called an “amazing experience,” ending the video with a sweet “Happy 40th Birthday to my mom!”
