After just six weeks of newlywed bliss, reality television darlings Evelyn Lozada and Chad Johnson are calling it quits. Claiming her marriage is “irretrievably broken,” Lozada filed for divorce Tuesday, her lawyer Michael B. Gilden confirmed.
“Given the recent events that have taken place, Evelyn has decided to file for divorce and move on with her life,” Gilden told the “The Insider” in a statement.
Lozada and Johnson – who were married in an extravagant made-for-TV ceremony on July 4 on the Caribbean island of St. Martin – are currently embroiled in a domestic violence dispute that in just a matter of days has given them a bigger audience then either of them could have ever imagined.
“I am deeply disappointed that Chad has failed to take responsibility for his actions and made false accusations against me,” the “Basketball Wives” star told TMZ about the argument that ended with her husband of six weeks in jail. “It is my sincere hope that he seeks the help he needs to overcome his troubles. Domestic violence is not okay and hopefully my taking a stand will help encourage other women to break their silence as well.”
The statement comes just days after the couple made headlines with the news of a bitter argument over the weekend. According to reports, the newlyweds were driving home from dinner on Saturday when Lozada found a receipt from a local drugstore for condoms. Lozada told local police that the argument quickly became physical when Johnson allegedly head-butted Lozada in the forehead.
Following the incident, Lozada fled to a neighbor’s home where a 911 call for help was placed. She was later taken to an area hospital, where she was treated for a “pretty good sized” laceration, Davie, Fla., police Captain Dale Engle told NFL.com.
Johnson, formerly known as Ochocinco (as a nod to his Cincinnati Bengals jersey number, 85), was arrested that evening. The “Dancing with the Stars” season 10 contestant was charged with simple domestic battery and released from jail Sunday on a $2,500 bond.
Following his release from jail, Johnson – an avid Twitter user who documented nearly every second of his wedding to Lozada – was dropped from the Miami Dolphins.
It’s just the latest in sobering news for the pair. It was announced Monday that their VH1 reality series “Ev and Ocho” – which documented the couple’s engagement and wedding earlier this year – had been pulled from its fall television line up. The show had been slated to air on Sept. 3.
Lozada, 36, had previously been engaged to NBA baller Antoine Walker. She has a teenaged daughter, Shaniece.
It is the first marriage for the 34-year-old Ochocinco, whose journey to find love had been the subject of two television shows: VH1’s “Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch” and HBO’s “Hard Knocks.”
