In Mexico, a suspected senior operative for the Zetas, known as “El Tecate,” was shot dead by police. Authorities also arrested four police officers with links to the drug cartel after intercepting a kidnapping. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has named Nicolas Maduro as his new Vice President. Maduro, a former bus driver and Chavez’s closest adviser, was Venezuela’s Foreign Minister since 2006. Colombia’s Defense Minister announced that 10 FARC rebels were captured during an army strike. Later this month, the Colombian government and FARC will hold peace talks to end 50 years of conflict. And in Buenos Aires, thousands marched in a protest organized by one of Argentina’s biggest labor unions. Demonstrators demanded an increase in wages for government workers hurt by Argentina’s double-digit inflation.
