In a follow-up to an ad which saw Samuel L. Jackson telling voters to “Wake the f— up!” the Jewish Council for Education and Research is up with an ad featuring Rosie Perez speaking frankly to Mitt Romney.
The ad opens with footage of Romney’s infamous “47 percent” comments, where he told a group of wealthy donors that 47 percent of Americans are lazy and feel entitled to government handouts. In the video Romney says he would be better off if he was Latino.
“Actually Mitt, that is so true,” Perez says. “All you have to do is look at the statistics and Mitt’s point becomes crystal clear.” Perez adds that 17 percent of Americans are Hispanic and there is a long line of Hispanic president’s including “Jorge Washington and Jorge Bush — uno y dos.”
The Romney campaign did not wish to comment on this story.
Perez wasn’t the only actress, taking on Romney. Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria and Kerry Washington were in an ad urging women to vote for Obama. The spot by MoveOn.org showed Longoria saying, “Mitt Romney is for ending funding to Planned Parenthood.” Johansson chimes in: “including cancer screenings.” Washington notes that Romney would overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion.
In the ad about Romney being Hispanic, Perez says looking like a clean-cut Hispanic-American like Julian Castro or Ricky Martin would do Romney some good and then pivots to the virtues of being other types of minorities.
“What if you were just a little bit gay Mitt? Think of all the advantages that would provide. If you were a gay Latina this election would be in the bag for you,” she says.
Perez concludes saying Romney was “cursed” by being the son of a wealthy governor and auto executive. She then become serious. “The reason why Latinos aren’t voting for you is because your policies suck,” she says.
“Being Latino wouldn’t win you the election — but saying jokingly that you wish you were — might actually lose it for you.”
