When the power went out at NYU’s Langone hospital on Monday night, Julia Alemany was having contractions. In Alemnay’s pitch-black hospital room, an anesthesiologist administered an epidural with only a flashlight and cell phones to guide her.

Alemany, originally from Barcelona, was transferred to another hospital where she gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Micah Alemany-Markus.
