Teen star Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber have broken up, ending their tabloid-friendly romance of nearly two years.
According to E! News, the pair broke up about a week ago.
“Because of their crazy schedules, it was getting harder and harder to maintain a relationship,” a source told E! News.
Gomez, 20 and Bieber, 18, first went public as a twosome when they attended the Vanity Fair Oscar party together in February 2011.
“I don’t know what to say,” teen pop icon Bieber told Open House Party Radio in an interview on Saturday. The Canadian native seemed reluctant to speak out about the breakup, adding, “I don’t know what’s going on in my life. To even assess that, it doesn’t make sense ’cause I have not made any comment.”
Meanwhile, Gomez – who famously got her start on the Disney Channel hit show “Wizards of Waverly Place” – stayed mum about the topic while promoting her clothing line at a Kmart in White Plains, New York.
Gomez, who was recently named one of Glamour Magazine’s “Women of the Year,” has faced a substantial amount of criticism from Bieber fans for dating the teen pop icon. Speaking out about the negativity, the “Love you like a Love Song” singer told the women’s mag, ”If I had let all of the negative stuff affect me, I don’t think I would be satisfied with the person I am now.”
“That’s what I tell my fans: If you’re miserable with everything going on in school, that is so not going to matter the moment you leave. My mom always told me, “Just turn the other cheek and keep moving forward.” That’s something I’ve always done, and now I look back and I have no regrets.”
