Daisy Fuentes chats about giving back, wigging out and celebrating the holidays

Daisy Fuentes seems to have it all: brains, beauty, and a growing global empire that includes successful Kohl’s lifestyle collection (that’s raked in more than $800 million since it hit stores in 2004!) and a brand-new line of wigs (who says Nicki Minaj is the only girl to have fun switching up her hairstyle?). Even so, Fuentes is making a point to give back this holiday season, lending her star power to raise money for the kids of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

During the season when making wish lists can often take precedence over making a difference, Fuentes is committed to helping St. Jude’s – a hospital dedicated to saving the lives of children impacted by devastating diseases – raise money to fulfill its mission of offering care to all kids, regardless of their family’s ability to pay for treatment. From charity work to chowing down with her Cuban relatives, the 45-year-old shared what she’s up to this holiday season.

Why is working with a charity like St. Jude’s so important to you?

“I feel it’s important for everyone to find an organization or a cause to support and champion.  I always felt the St. Jude mission was an important one, but it wasn’t until I visited the hospital over a decade ago, that I really knew the magnitude of the miracles and hope coming out of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  It was then that I vowed to myself to let everyone know how important the work of St. Jude is.”

Why do the children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital need our attention and resources?

“It costs 1.8 million to run the hospital a day. They depend mostly on public donations.  No child is ever turned away because of a family’s inability to pay. No family is ever asked for payment. The cures that come from the research being done at St. Jude [are] immediately shared with the medical community around the world.”

You’ve worked with so many charities and lent your voice to a variety of causes. Why does spending time on philanthropic causes remain a priority for you year after year?

“I feel that celebrity has given me the privilege of having a voice.  I can reach many people around the world very quickly; it would be foolish of me to not use that for a good cause.”

So much attention is placed on what a celebrity wears or who they are dating, rather than their body of work and their charitable causes. Are you ever discouraged by that?

“No. Everyone chooses what they want to focus on and where they put their energy.  They choose theirs and I choose mine. They are very different.”

During the upcoming holiday season, Latinos put a lot of emphasis on family and tradition. How will you celebrate the holidays this year?

“With my family and friends. I will have a full house in the mountains. We’ll snowboard, eat a lot, and most importantly be together and make memories. To me there’s nothing better.”

You’ve just released Luxhair Wow, a new line of hair extensions and hair pieces. What makes wigs a style must-have?

“Wigs and hair pieces have come a long way.  They’ve always been a Hollywood beauty secret.  Everyone from Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, J-Lo, to Beyonce use hairpieces.  Wigs are fashion accessories and the easiest way to change your look without a major commitment.  My wigs and pieces, LUXHAIR WOW by Daisy Fuentes, are amazing quality and very affordable so can change your look as often as you like.”

You’re considered a Latina who’s helped break down many barriers in entertainment. At a time when we’re all giving thanks, what do your accomplishments mean to you as you look forward to future projects?

“I’ve been very fortunate. I’m very grateful for all the opportunities life has offered me.  I’m happy that after more than 20 years in the business I still enjoy it all.  I don’t take any of it for granted, ever.”
