A Mexican-American superstar and diva, Jenni Rivera was an award-winning musician, clothing designer, entrepreneur, college graduate and real estate agent, but the title she was most proud of was mother.
“I’m a mother above all things,” said the artist at Billboard’s Latin Music Conference in Miami last April.
A mother of five and grandmother of two, Rivera had her share of personal troubles – her first husband physically abused her and also sexually molested her eldest daughter, she constantly battled her weight, had been cheated on, and had just filed for divorce from her third husband – but her family came first. Thanks to her hit show, “I Love Jenni,” audiences were able to catch a glimpse of what made their crazy family unit – silly, frank, real and loving – just like our own.
Janney “Chiquis” Marín Rivera
Jenni Rivera gave birth to her first daughter, Janney “Chiquis” Marin Rivera, while just a sophomore in high school and there was no one of whom she was more protective or close to. The 26-year-old came into her own as the subject two reality shows on mun2 – “Jenni Rivera Presents: Chiquis ‘N Control” and “Chiquis & Raq-C” – and gave credit to her mother for allowing her to come into her own as a single Latina in Los Angeles.
“My mom is my ride-or-die bitch, and I’m hers, ‘cause no matter what happens, we’re there for each other,” Chiquis told Latina magazine in 2011. But the duo’s relationship had encountered some friction, as “La Diva de la Banda” accused her daughter of sleeping with her ex-husband, Major League Baseball player Esteban Loaiza, from whom she filed divorce in October. And while Chiquis adamantly denied the assertion, the once-close pair allegedly hadn’t spoken for more than a month leading up to her death.
Jacqueline Marín Rivera
Rivera’s second-eldest Jacqui blossomed in the spotlight of her mother’s reality show and her recent wedding to new husband Mik0 Campos was made into a mun2 special (“Jenni Rivera Presents: La Boda de mi Hija”). The primetime show aired in November and was a ratings hit, as the evening’s No.1 show among Latinos 18-49 and 18-34 across all of both English and Spanish-language cable. Jacqui is also a mother, to three-year-old daughter, Jaylah Hope.
Michael Marín Rivera
Jenni’s eldest son, Michael — born in 1991 – with her first husband, José Trinidad Marín, encountered personal drama of his own when he was arrested on sexual molestation charges in 2010. Accused of having sex with a minor, he posted a $50,000 bail and was released shortly after. He welcomed a daughter of his own named Luna Amira in August 2012.
“Ya!!! Gracias a Dios por otra bendicion en mi vida. Ya llego mi 2nda nieta. Gracias a todos por sus oraciones (Thank you God for another blessing in my life. My second granddaughter has arrived. Thanks for all your prayers),” wrote Jenni on Twitter following the birth.
Jenicka Priscilla López Rivera
Jenni Rivera married her second husband in Juan López in 1997, and their daughter Jenicka was born that year as well. The 15-year-old stole the show on “I Love Jenni” with her pronounced affection for her family and frequently-tweeted sweet family photos and greetings.
Johnny López Rivera
Johnny was Jenni Rivera’s youngest son and with no intention of having more children (“I don’t have plans to get pregnant ever again,” the singer told People en Español earlier this year), she was particularly close to her 11-year-old. Her youngest has been the most public about his grief over his mother’s passing, and while he was actively tweeting hopeful messages about his mother in the hours immediately following the tragic news of the star’s plane crash, he has not tweeted since Monday afternoon.
