Latino celebrities made their fair share of news in 2012, but looking back, we can’t help but reflect on the biggest “say what?” moments that made the year so OMG-worthy. From Sofia Vergara’s infamous wardrobe malfunction just minutes before she was to take the stage at the Emmy Awards to Demi Lovato’s lusciously thick eyebrows and the startling circumstances surround Jenni Rivera’s death , here’s our countdown of the top OMG celebrity moments of the year.
Jenni Riveara’s sudden death
Jenni Rivera was a Mexican-American songstress who was beloved by millions of fans on either side of the U.S.-Mexico border. And at just 43 years old, Rivera – who had broken down barriers in norteña
and banda music as the only woman in that genre – was an entrepreneur whose clothing line, fragrance, radio show and popular reality series had cemented her popularity among Latino audiences. When news broke on Dec. 9 about the disappearance of a plane that had been carrying the singer and members of her entourage, fans hoped for the best and were shocked mere hours later to learn that the plane had crashed, killing all on board. “La Diva de la Banda” will live on through her music and philanthropic work, but her death was a tragic event that took the star too soon.
Sofia’s Emmy dress mishap
Colombian beauty Sofia Vergara is known for her bubbly and over-the-top personality, and by the looks of her infamous Emmy Awards wardrobe malfunction, it looks like nothing can contain the outspoken star! While the 40-year-old star did look stunning in her teal Zuhair Murad gown, the dress just couldn’t keep her famous curves in check, splitting in the backside just twenty moments before Vergara and the rest of the “Modern Family” cast were to hit the stage to accept an award for best comedy.
Javier Bardem’s Bond villain
Is he or isn’t he? All eyes may have been on Daniel Craig’s muscular Bond, but it was Javier Bardem’s oh-so-creepy villain Silva that had audiences talking about the newest Bond franchise installment, “Skyfall.” Silva’s sexual orientation may have been ambiguous, but ever the artist, Bardem simply chalked up his character’s complex personality as “uncomfortable.”
Demi Lovato has undergone media scrutiny for her dating choices, weight and decision to enter rehab. But the 20-year-old “X Factor” judge found herself trending on Twitter when she debuted noticeably thicker eyebrows during an episode of the “X Factor” in November 2012. The result? Viral web pieces like “The Evolution of Demi Lovato’s Eyebrows on the ‘X Factor’” and “Demi Lovato is Serious About Them Eyebrows.” Our response? Let the girl live, because as long as she’s healthy, she’s a Latina we’re rooting for.
Eva Longoria: “I wear wigs”
Eva Longoria is rarely photographed without looking perfect head to toe and is known for looking nothing less than stellar at awards shows and red carpet events. But the pint-sized actress made headlines when she revealed that she relied on wigs to look flawless during her many outfit changes as co-host at the 2012 Alma Awards. Longoria made no apologies as she explained to NBC Latino that wigs – yes, really! – are her secret style weapon for looking fabulous on the fly. Check out the interview here.
Christina Aguilera draws some unexpected attention
Christina Aguilera may have stopped by the White House earlier this year to pick up an award for her humanitarian work, but by the looks of one tell-all-picture (after all, they do say a picture is worth a thousand words!), Secretary of State Hilary Clinton seemed to hold a certain amount of admiration for the busty singer.
“That looks like it was Photoshopped, but it’s not. That was a real moment,” the songstress told talk show host Ellen in a recent interview about the photo.
And while Aguilera has millions of fans around the world, she made no secret of her love for the former First Lady.
“She’s such like, you know, a force in a room,” “The Voice” judge said during “Ellen.”
“She’s got that star charisma and everything about her. I couldn’t take me eyes off her either—so, it was mutual.”
