Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is fighting a severe lung infection according to government officials. Few believe he will be able to return to the country to attend his inauguration next week. Violent protests in Santiago yesterday, as Chile’s indigenous tribe, the Mapuches, clashed with police. More than 200 protesters marched through the streets and stormed two Spanish banks to honor the death of a former activist. Heavy rains triggered mudslides and flooding in Rio de Janeiro yesterday leaving hundreds homeless and one dead.  Gushing water overturned cars and destroyed houses in the poorest part of the city. Also in Brazil, a mayor is in legal trouble for riding a donkey to his inauguration. Vanderlei Batista defied a ruling banning him from riding the donkey and now faces possible fines.
