The baby bump watch has given way to an official countdown to the birth of Shakira’s first-born, with numerous internet sources reporting that the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer will give birth Tuesday.
“This Tuesday we are going to have our first child!” wrote Gerard Piqué on his Instagram page Monday. The announcement — which was posted on an account which hasn’t been officially verified by the soccer player — follows reports by the Spanish daily La Razón that the 35-year-old Colombian star made plans for an induction after being admitted to a hospital in Barcelona, Spain on Sunday.
Adding to the media hype surrounding the baby’s birth are numerous accounts of a Tuesday delivery by several American news outlets, which had estimated the bilingual star would give birth at the end of January.
The speculation regarding Shakira’s delivery follows the release of several semi-nude photos of the photogenic couple – who met in 2010 on the set of her music video for the South Africa World cup theme song “Waka Waka” – in conjunction with a new charity initiative encouraging fans to send donations to poverty-stricken children.
The philanthropic project, coined “Shakira & Gerard Piqué’s World Baby Shower to Help UNICEF Save Children’s Lives,” allows donors to choose from a number of ““Inspired Gifts,” which include a baby scale ($37), polio vaccine ($10) or even a $5 malaria net, all which will be donated to children in need.
To announce the charity, Shakira tweeted one of the images picture of she and FC Barcelona soccer star Piqué with the caption “We’d like to celebrate the imminent birth of our first child with all of you.”
The philanthropically-minded star – who has been a UNICEF global ambassador since 2003, founded her own charity, and has worked with the Clinton Global Initiative – has gone on record about bringing up her first-born to put others first.
“When the baby is born, I’ll take him with me on charity trips,” she told Germany’s RTL in October of her approach to motherhood. “He shall learn that he is able to change the world.”
And while no official news regarding the birth of Shakira’s baby has yet been released, it looks like her professional engagements — including her appearance on NBC singing competition “The Voice” in March — may make her anxious for a timely delivery.
Shakira’s publicist has not returned NBC Latino’s request to confirm news of the birth.
