Gerard Piqué is like any other new dad, anxious about his new role to a tiny newborn. But the FC Barcelona soccer player showed a surprising amount of emotion when talking to reporters as he left the hospital where his son was delivered on Tuesday evening.
“I was very nervous,” said Piqué of son Milan Piqué Mebarak’s birth. “It isn’t the same as when you see it on TV.”
Quite the proud dad, Piqué also told reporters that his son has inherited his good looks, saying, “they said he has my lips but we will see.”
And while Piqué may have left the hospital to head to soccer practice, he was right by Shakira’s side during the delivery – a moment which he admitted made him cry a bit.
“It is a unique moment,” said the 25-year-old, who shared that Shakira also cried with happiness about the new arrival.
As for the new arrival’s name, “the name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification,” reads the press release.
And just in case soccer fans had any doubts about the new baby’s sports allegiance, the statement made one thing very clear.
“Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth,” says the statement on Shakira’s website.
Although Piqué headed straight back to the soccer field without much bonding time with baby, new mama Shakira won’t have much of a maternity leave either. In March, she’ll be joining Usher, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine on the third season of NBC’s “The Voice.”
