President Hugo Chavez’s surprise return to Venezuela yesterday has sparked speculation about new elections in the country. A poll shows that his appointed successor, Vice President Nicolás Maduro, would win. Protesters in Brazil blocked the screening of a documentary featuring dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez, who was in attendance after being allowed to leave for the first time in a decade.  The stop in Brazil is her first on an 80 day tour. A delegation of U.S. lawmakers headed to Cuba yesterday in another attempt to improve relations with President Raul Castro. They said relations cannot move forward unless jailed contractor Alan Gross is released. A Mexican police chief from a violent border city is missing. His city, Nuevo Laredo, is known as a stronghold of the Zetas drug cartel. Two of the police chief’s bodyguards were slain earlier this month.
