Mexico’s most powerful teachers’ union leader, Elba Esther Gordillo, will stand trial on charges of embezzling funds. The judge ruled she will have to stay in jail ahead of her trial. Venezuela’s Communications Minister announced that a new infection has put President Hugo Chavez in a delicate state. Vice President Maduro has accused the U.S. of spreading rumors that Chavez may be dead from cancer. A Chilean judge is ordering that the body of poet Pablo Neruda be exhumed. The autopsy comes after allegations that Neruda was poisoned during Pinochet’s dictatorship and the Bolivian President granted military honors to three Bolivian soldiers detained in Chile for over a month. The soldiers were arrested after allegedly crossing the border while chasing smugglers.
