Victor Ortiz’s background is anything but a fairy tale: His mother left the family when he was just 7; his father abandoned them when he was 12. But personal adversity has made the 26-year-old lightweight boxer a champion in the boxing ring and it looks like the Mexican American is determined to bring his competitive edge to the dance floor on “Dancing with the Stars.”
Hand in hand with professional partner Lindsay Arnold, Ortiz performed a Foxtrot to Maroon 5’s “Daylight” that delivered a standing ovation from the audience. And the scores weren’t so bad either: he received 19 points from judges Bruno Tonioli, Carrie Ann Inaba and Len Goodman. (7-6-6) , placing him ahead of fellow contestants Linsa Vanderpump, Wynonna Judd, Andy Dick and D.L. Hughley.
Ortiz, who grew up in Kansas, was praised by Bruno for his “boyish charm and Latino passion” but criticized for his footwork. Inaba proved herself a fan with the exclamation “You sparkle,” while Goodman said he would have liked to see more “wows” but enjoyed the show nonetheless.
