Latina speaks about overcoming stereotypes that wrestling is a man’s sport

High school senior Sandra Munoz is on the Palmview High women’s wrestling team, but wrestling was not always her sport of choice.

“Because in my family, basketball was it. There was no wrestling, wrestling wasn’t a girls sport,” she says.

But after a year of encouragement to join the team from a coach, Munoz decided to give wrestling a try. She said after her first go, she’s never looked back.

“Wrestling is my passion because it is one of those sports that is just you and only. It pushes you, and you are able to compete on your own, yes you practice with your teammates, but once you are in there, it’s you and your opponent and that’s it,” says Munoz.
