Jenny from the block is paving the way for new “It” girl Rebecca Marie Gomez, appearing in a new video in support of the 16-year-old Latina.
Gomez – nicknamed Becky G – has J.Lo’s official blessing, naming her track “Becky from the Block.” Not only does the single feature the same tune and refrain as Lopez’s 2002 hit “Jenny from the Block,” but Lopez makes a stunning cameo in the video as well, channeling her Bronx-bred roots in a New York Yankees cap and oversized hoop earrings while riding on the streets of a California neighborhood in a muscle car.
“It was like a ‘pinch me now’ moment. I still get goose bumps when I watch the video,” Becky G recently told Access Hollywood. Chatting about the moment when Lopez visited the young singer in a recording session, Becky G shared, “She is just naturally beautiful but yeah, she walked into the studio looking all hot and stuff, [wearing a] fur coat, I was like ‘Oh my gosh!’”
“I won’t stop till I get to the top – I’m so Becky from the block,” sings Becky G, whose video was shot in her hometown of Inglewood, California. As Becky G strolls through her neighborhood, friends and family appear in support of the singer/rapper, including Lopez accompanied by a sexy tattooed companion – none other than Lopez’s boyfriend, Casper Smart. As it turns out, Smart’s cameo was Becky G’s idea, adding extra star power to the three-minute video.
“[J.Lo] helped me pick the car out and she was like, ‘Oh, we need somebody with tattoos [to drive],’” Becky G explained to Access Hollywood. “I was like, ‘Casper maybe? He’s got the tattoos going on, we can put a beanie and white tank on him.’ She was all for it and so was he.”
It’s a huge breakthrough for the young Latina, who was signed to Kemo Sabe, an imprint of Sony Music Entertainment last year after producer Dr. Luke (behind hits for Pink, Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Nicky Minaj) spotted the California native singing and rapping in a series of YouTube clips. In addition to her vocal skills, Becky G is a song writer whose credits include British import Cher Lloyd’s single “Oath”and Cody Simpson’s single “Wish U Were Here,” as well as a remix of “Die Young” by Ke$ha.
“I was going through a hard time — my parents had just lost their home,” Becky G said of what inspired her to pursue music. “We moved into my grandpa’s converted garage — there were six people living in [one] room. “Music was my one way to vent.”
And with the help of superstar J.Lo, it looks like Becky G is well on her way to stardom, making her early childhood dreams come true. As for Lopez, her endorsement of the young Mexican-American isn’t in any way meant to signal her own retirement: The 43-year-old is working on an upcoming album, which will feature tunes in collaboration with stars like Chris Brown.
