[VIDEO] Telemundo’s Lori Montenegro inspires at college commencement address

College graduations offer the chance to reflect on the past while embracing the future, and Telemundo national Washington correspondent Lori Montenegro spoke to new graduates at Bergen Community College in New Jersey about the power of education. In her bilingual address to 2,000 graduates, Montenegro congratulated the college’s students — 34% of whom are Latino — on their extraordinary achievement while reflecting on her own education.

“It brings back great memories for me,” said Montenegro of delivering the commencement address to the college’s graduates. “Because you see, I am a product of a community college. Miami Dade in Miami, Florida.”

Montenegro — who counts President Obama among her most famous interviewees — also said that she owed the start of her journalism career to a certain community college professor.

“I began my career because there was a professor, Mr. Kern, who went the extra mile and sent his students off to do some interviews,” reminisced Montenegro. He said, ‘You’re not going to get the job, but go and get the experience. Well, I got the job,” Montenegro said.
