Daniel Hernandez wants focus on students, not anti-gay flyers

When bullets were flying — he saved a life.

Daniel Hernandez is known nationwide for helping former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords survive the Tucson shootings.

In November of 2011, he was elected to the Sunnyside Unified School Board in Tucson, Arizona.

Now he is the target of dirty politics attacking his sexuality – a flyer reading, quote: “Put a real man on the Sunnyside Board – Daniel Hernandez is l-g-b-t. We need someone who will support sports and cares about our kids. We don’t need someone who hates our values.”

Marcos Castro is leading an effort to recall Hernandez.

Castro filed the paperwork two weeks ago citing that Hernandez, “portrays a negative image to our school district. He clearly does not understand that the reputation of the entire school district is reflected in his behavior and negative attitude towards school personnel.”

“We would not, as an organization do anything to someone like that. We are professionals,” Castro said.

Castro denies any connection to the hateful flyers.

Hernandez thinks the person behind it needs to be educated on tolerance.

“We should be talking about everything that we need for our students: preventing the loss of all day kindergarten, making sure we have early childhood education, not whether or not someone is a real man on a school board,” said Hernandez.
