Sonia Sotomayor was on Sesame Street for the second time. This time talking about careers.

Sonia Sotomayor on Sesame Street: Being a princess is not a career

Sonia Sotomayor knows careers — her stratospheric rise to being the first Latina Supreme Court Justice is a pretty good example. So she went on Sesame Street to give some career advice to Abby the muppet.

Abby was heartened to hear about careers and announced her intention to aspire to be a professional princess. But Sotomayor wasn’t having any of that.

“Abby, pretending to be a princess is fun, but it’s definitely not a career,” she said. “Remember a career is a job that you train and prepare for and that you plan to do for a long time.”

So what careers does Sotomayor think a girl like Abby can have? She mentions some of the top professions.

“A teacher, a lawyer, a doctor, an engineer and even a scientist,” she said.

Sotomayor’s advice has a big influence on Abby, who then decides she wants to be a judge just like her.

This wasn’t Sotomayor’s first foray into the world of Sesame Street. In February she went on and spoke Spanish while also finding time to rule on a fairy-tale dispute.
