My 13-year-old daughter comes home from school, has a snack and sits down to do her homework. One of her assignments, she tells me excitedly, is going to take place on a social network called My Big Campus. The science teacher Mrs. Flynn has given the students a pager to use with different activities, some of which happen at a specific time in the afternoon on this platform. The students are thrilled to be doing this collaboratively; they are connecting after school hours and using a platform so similar to Facebook in look and feel, that at first I thought she was on it!

Our parent community feels extremely grateful that our local school district is embracing technology in such productive and innovative ways. Since the successful rollout of My Big Campus by our visionary head of technology, kids are using the tool to connect with teachers after hours, to hold study forums and chats, to get answers to their homework questions, to post blogs about their service work and to catch up on school news and events. Almost overnight, the walls have fallen and the teacher/student relationship has become more dynamic and interactive.

This is not happening in isolation; in fact, a recent Pew research indicates teachers are actively using technology to make their work more effective with 92% indicating that the Internet has a major impact on their ability to access content and resources required for teaching.

All of us parents and caregivers share in the responsibility of teaching our kids the love of learning, and using modern technology is one of the ways we can accomplish this alongside our teachers. Here are some of the most commonly used tools our teachers are implementing in the classroom; getting yourself acquainted with them is going to help your learner:
